Gospel – 8/25/-20 – Matthew 23:23-26
Jesus said:“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin,
and have neglected the weightier things of the law:
judgment and mercy and fidelity.
But these you should have done, without neglecting the others.
Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!“
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You cleanse the outside of cup and dish,
but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup,
so that the outside also may be clean.”
Great message from Jesus, not just to the scribes and Pharisees, but to anyone who strives to make themselves look better than they are in appearance while all the time rotting on the inside.
It is not just a good message to the time of Jesus but also to anyone who lies to themselves about their good while ignoring their rotting core.
While we put on a great show for those we deal with – making a show of giving, helping, loving – all the time, we forget that in that small, quiet place inside us, we think no one else knows about, there is another who comes to us – and HE knows.
If we are not well on the inside, no fine show on the outside will cover our stench forever.
We die from the inside out.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
