Gospel – January 3, 2020 – John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.

In school I ran a lot of track up through college. In track I ran a lot of relays. In a relay you have a team of four who race but there are others who have assisted them preparing for that race.

When the race is run each person has their task and once completed they hand a baton to the next competitor.

Today John has completed his part – his task. And we hear him hand the baton to Jesus.

John was likely relieved to see and recognize Jesus because now he knows his race is coming to its end – he’s competed well.

And we know that Jesus will compete, complete and will win the race – for all of us.

But first – he needed John to get him the baton.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
