Gospel – December 11, 2019 – Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said to the crowds:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
As my father’s time is winding down I can’t help but look at this reading as a buffer from God for what’s coming.
Not sure if everyone knows exactly what a yoke is but just in case you don’t – a yoke was used to pair oxen (mostly) together that they could pull a load behind them. It might be a plow, wagon, logs, etc. But together they were able to handle that load much easier.
My Poppa has carried a huge load all his life. Today, I am reassured that he isn’t having to carry that load alone. Jesus is yoked with him but is carrying the heavier portion of the load now. That makes me feel much better because Poppa is at a point where I can no longer do anything for him – to lighten his load. He doesn’t even recognize me so what help can I be to him now other than to continue to love the greatest man I have ever known – warts and all.
I know Poppa is carrying a lighter load because as Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves.For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
It isn’t easy to let someone go who has been in your life since the day you drew your first breath. But it makes it easier seeing him yoked with my Savior.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
