Gospel – November 21, 2019 – Luke 19:41-44
As Jesus drew near Jerusalem,
he saw the city and wept over it, saying,
“If this day you only knew what makes for peace–
but now it is hidden from your eyes.
For the days are coming upon you
when your enemies will raise a palisade against you;
they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
They will smash you to the ground and your children within you,
and they will not leave one stone upon another within you
because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
Well, that certainly sounds dire. The coming days cause Jesus such sorrow. Why?
Have you known someone who you want so badly for them to recognize the better way, choosing a better path, but they ignore your advice – your pleas? Maybe that has been us? Finally you realize they just aren’t going to listen and you are heartbroken for what you know is coming – and you weep.
That is Jesus looking at Jerusalem in today’s Gospel. God has given them everything. And still they turn away. God won’t give up on any of us but he weeps for our lack of understanding. He knows what is at stake. He knows the time is nearer still.
Are we prepared or are we Jerusalem?
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
