Gospel – November 15, 2019 – Luke 17:26-37
Jesus said to his disciples:
“As it was in the days of Noah,
so it will be in the days of the Son of Man;
they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage up to the day
that Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came and destroyed them all.
Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot:
they were eating, drinking, buying,
selling, planting, building;
on the day when Lot left Sodom,
fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all.
So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
On that day, someone who is on the housetop
and whose belongings are in the house
must not go down to get them,
and likewise one in the field
must not return to what was left behind.
Remember the wife of Lot.
Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,
but whoever loses it will save it.
I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed;
one will be taken, the other left.
And there will be two women grinding meal together;
one will be taken, the other left.”
They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?”
He said to them, “Where the body is,
there also the vultures will gather.”
I will be in East Texas with my dad so not sure about internet.
Yesterday the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom will appear (for selfish reasons). Jesus addressed them but today he speaks to his Apostles only.
He tells them when he returns all will appear normal. And then all of a sudden he will be there. No one has time to go gather anything. Like Noah’s time no one but those prepared and on the ark are saved. Lot’s wife looking back, not prepared to leave it all behind, is left behind as a pillar of salt. Things of this world should not be important – if you can’t let them go you will be left.
Be prepared is the message just as we come to our time of preparation, Advent, and the Cycle A year of Matthew.
Do you know people who on the surface appear to be kind and good but under the surface they appear more like a duck – chaos? Serene on the surface and turmoil below as they are constantly working to care for themselves. Jesus warns that some will be ready and others not. No free rides because those you associate with are ready. Two people side by side – one taken and one left.
Take stock. What is important to you? God or possessions? Choose now because when he comes it will be too late.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
